The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) offers information on the Mammography Quality Standards Act’s (MQSA) program and facilities, and facility feedback at its MQSA website.

Known as the Facility Scorecard, it is provided with 3 primary objectives. These include:

  • to inform the public on how mammography facilities are doing with regard to MQSA standards,
  • to allow your facility to compare itself to the rest of the nation, and
  • to provide a mechanism for facilities to contact FDA regarding the scorecard and other MQSA issues.

The Facility Scorecard is available as a web page and is part of the MQSA site maintained by the FDA. It provides information about national inspection results, frequently-requested national statistical data, and eventually, a series of “Frequently Asked Questions.”

This information can help achieve the ultimate goal of health care facilities improving the quality of their mammography, by allowing them to see how they compare to other facilities nationwide. It is possible to benchmark, establish goals or thresholds, compare, learn from the outcomes of such comparisons and consequently understand how to do a better job.

To assist facilities in helping to more easily use this information, the Leonides Coalition is announcing release of The MQSA Facility Trends tools. These tools provide graphical monitors for many of the MSQA national statistics, posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration each month. Twelve key indicators are monitored in both chart and table format to allow for ease in trending and benchmarking.

The MQSA Facility Trends tools from the Leonides Coalition also incorporate some of the newest tools for spatial thinking, analyzing and visualizing spatial data. Motion Charts* are an innovative product that offers dynamic flash based charting Visualization API permitting the user to explore several indicators over time. Using this free online tool now makes it possible to examine the interrelationships between benchmarks such as number of certified facilities, accredited units and volume over a time frame spanning from November 2003, until the present. Choose the metrics you want to compare and expose data relationships that would be difficult to see in traditional reports.

Because knowledge is power, you are invited join the discussion and share how collectively we can pool our bodies of knowledge, experience, and data to improve the quality of the care we provide to achieve what Leonides set out to accomplish...the eradication of breast cancer.
